Lessons from 1 Corinthians 9 to 10

1 Corinthians 9

 The Authority of an Apostle

Validation of Apostleship: Paul emphasizes his authority and role as an apostle, pointing out that his experiences and works are evidence of his apostleship (1 Corinthians 9:1-2).

Rights of an Apostle: He argues for the rights that come with being an apostle, including the right to be supported materially by the community he serves (1 Corinthians 9:3-14).

 Sacrifice for the Gospel

Voluntary Sacrifice: Paul explains that despite having the right to material support, he chooses not to use it to avoid hindering the spread of the Gospel (1 Corinthians 9:15-18).

Commitment to Preaching: He is compelled by God to preach the Gospel and sees it as a duty, not a source of pride or income (1 Corinthians 9:16-17).

Adaptability in Ministry

Cultural Adaptation: Paul describes his strategy of becoming "all things to all people" to win as many as possible to Christ, adapting to different cultural contexts without compromising his core beliefs (1 Corinthians 9:19-23).

Discipline and Purpose: He likens his ministry to an athletic race, emphasizing the need for discipline, purpose, and self-control to achieve the ultimate prize of eternal life (1 Corinthians 9:24-27).

1 Corinthians 10

 Lessons from Israel's History (1 Corinthians 10:1-13)

Paul reminds the Corinthians of their ancestors' experiences in the wilderness, highlighting God's guidance and provision through the cloud, sea, spiritual food, and water, which symbolized Christ. Despite these blessings, most of the Israelites displeased God and suffered consequences due to their sins. These events serve as warnings against craving evil, idolatry, sexual immorality, testing Christ, and grumbling. Paul emphasizes that temptations are common to all, but God provides a way to endure them.

Avoiding Idolatry and Participating in the Lord’s Supper (1 Corinthians 10:14-22)

Paul urges believers to flee from idolatry and consider the implications of participating in pagan practices. He explains that sharing in the Lord’s Supper symbolizes unity with Christ, just as the Israelites were united through their sacrifices. He warns against partaking in both the Lord’s Table and demonic rituals, as this provokes God’s jealousy. Believers must choose to serve God alone and not compromise their faith.

 Exercising Freedom with Responsibility (1 Corinthians 10:23-33)

Paul addresses the concept of Christian liberty, stating that while everything may be permissible, not everything is beneficial or constructive. Believers should prioritize the well-being of others over personal freedom. He advises on matters of conscience, such as eating food offered to idols, emphasizing sensitivity to others' beliefs. Ultimately, Paul encourages doing everything for God’s glory and avoiding actions that cause offense, aiming to lead others to salvation through selfless conduct.

Lessons from 1 Corinthians 11 -12

1 Corinthians 11

1 Corinthians 11:1-12

This chapter started with Apostle Paul admonishing believers to follow his example as he follows Christ Jesus. He acknowledged how the Christians at the time followed all instructions he passed down to them. However, he made it clear to them that Christ was the head of every man, and the man head of their wife as Christ is the Head and God the head of Christ. He also mentioned how if a man prophecies or teaches with his head covered he dishonours God. I believe this is not literal however it's a spiritual covering that stops the direct connection to the man's true head which is Jesus Christ but we know that most Christian men are not obliged to cover their head based on this but the woman are meant to according to 1 Corinthians 11:6.  Verse 7 further explains the hierarchy of a man being a reflection of God's glory why a woman is the expression of the glory of man. (I believe this is down to the story of creation as woman was formed from the man while the man was created from scratch by God).

1 Corinthians 11:13-19

The question posed by apostle Paul in verse 13 about the appropriateness of a woman leading prayer in public with their head uncovered, a man having long hair is classified as a dishonour. He didn't approve having cliques in the congregation as it leads to division.

1 Corinthians 11:20-28

 This addresses not eating when gathered in the congregation, don't humiliate the poor. He sighted example of the last supper as it was done in an equal manner as the bread represented the body of Christ and the wine His blood and it must not be done unworthily. Which means any iota of sin must not be within you if you want to partake of the communion. It can not be taken where there is division or clique or anything that is not in line with the precepts of God. 

1 Corinthians 29-34

 Partaking of the communion with so much sin and sinful nature is like applying a death sentence to oneself.  He stated that it is the reason many are weak and sickly because the communion represents Christ, taking it worthily will bring healing but taking it unworthily will lead to sickness and possible death. We must only engage in the communion in true spirit, repent of all sin and don't see the communion as a means to quench your thirst or hunger.

1 Corinthians 12:1-3

This chapter started with spiritual gift, Apostle Paul was concerned of misinformation. He clearly stated in verse 3 that no one speaking under the power and influence of the Holy Spirit will lay a curse on another.  I have heard on occasion where people place curses on others and say they are speaking from the spirit of God.

1Corinthians 12:4-12

From verse 4 Apostle Paul mentioned that there are varieties of gifts within the body of Christ but there is just one Holy Spirit. The gifts and talents might function differently but there is only one Lord and one God. Everyone is given the proportion of the Holy Spirit according to the gift in them but the evidence must be leading to one source. Through the Holy Spirit some might be given the spirit of wisdom, utterance, interpretation of tongues all of these are brought together by one spirit of God. 

Just as the body is one unit with numerous parts, that is exactly how the body of Christ is. Imagine the physical body have so many organs and blood pumps through some and water in some, or waste in some but they all function to regulate the body appropriately.

In other words, you can't stand apart from the body of Christ to function against the body of Christ and claim that it is the Holy spirit. The Holy spirit will not lead you to fight the body that He wants us to propagate the gospel about.

1 Corinthians 12:13-26

We are all saved into one body despite our physical or biological background. So if a part of the body decides to be selfish with its function it will affect the other parts. Every organ of the body has its appointed function, the body of Christ must maintain decorum, not division or self gratification of any kind.

1 Corinthians 12: 27-31

Every part of the body of Christ is distinct with their own function but the goal remains the same. Some people are appointed to be apostle, some prophets, teachers, wonder workers those with ability to heal, helpers, administrators, speakers in different tongues. Some might even possess multiple ministries but if you have one stick to it. Don't crave the gift for your self gratification, if it doesn't lead souls to Christ regardless of the fame or accolades you acquire it is not recognized by God. The last verse admonishes us to cultivate the gift of grace above all things.

This scripture is not for the faint hearted even if you have been following Jesus for decades it's worth revisiting and reviewing our lives and our ways to see if it aligns with the will and plans of God. In this age of social media and millions of followers, are your followers aware of who you follow, are you leading them to Jesus or eternal doom?

Lord help us in Jesus name amen.

Lessons from Exodus 23 -24

Exodus 23

From Previous chapters, the Lord was giving Moses the precepts of what should and should not be done by the Israelites. 

Chapter 23: 1-9 started with warnings, do not to give false report, do not to be an unrighteous witness, don't follow evil crowd or treat the poor partially. Some of the warning includes not taking bribe, not oppressing temporary residents.

From these few verses it's easy to note that God wants us to live in a set way and it is the righteous way because all the don't that was listed were things He frowned upon. The main question is are we abiding by the precepts of God or have we watered down the word just to suit us.

From verse 10- 19 documents how God instructed the children of Israel to work for 6 years and allow the ground to rest in the 7th year (this will enable the nutrients of the soil to replenish), the importance of keeping Sabbath and resting, celebrating the feast of harvest which is the Pentecost, the feast of unleavened bread, bringing first fruits, first child to God.

Verse 20-33 Documented how He has secured their protection by sending angels before them, to bring their enemies down, how they must serve God almighty,  how he will drive the inhabitants of the lands He was taking them to little by little and the children of Israel will take over. There was emphasis on not making covenant with any other gods and anything that will make them sin against God.

What I deduce from this chapter is that the love of God is beyond what we can fathom, He has everything planned out. However,engaging in sin or anything that He frowns upon brings reproach. It is a reminder that when I obey God, He will fulfill His promises concerning me.

Exodus 24

Verse 1-8  God requested that Moses come up to the Lord but Aaron and the others should worship afar off only Moses had the special invitation and privilege to come closer to God. By the time Moses told  the Israelites the instructions, they said they will do according to what God said.

One lesson to pick here as a leader is who are you answerable to, I am not talking about hierarchy within an organisation or church setting. Even as an individual aside the physical people you are answerable to, can you access God directly? A leader or person who still do not have a direct access to God need to find a way to do away with anything that limits their relationship and accessibility to God.

 

Verse 9 -18 recorded how Moses and the elders went up the mountain as God requested. Moses wrote down all God said to Him. It was noted that he went up with Joshua, but only Moses went further. The clouds covered the mountain and the glory of the Lord rested on mount Sinai for 6 days and on the 7th day God called Moses out, and the glory of God appeared to the Israelites like devouring fire then Moses entered the clouds for another 40 days and 40 nights.

The presence of God is where the impossibility is born, when you carry the presence of God things changes in you and around you. As a believer we must crave to spend time in God and with God, if we indeed want His glory over our lives and all around us. It also important to pray for leaders of the gospel to carry the true presence of God, because you will partake from the type of anointing you believe in. If your spiritual leader lacks glory of God it is not possible for it to be dissemination to the followers except the followers themselves seek God personally.

Lord thank you for the grace you have given to me through your word to know you more

Lord thank you for this wonderful new dawn and the privilege of life

Lord grant me grace to always uphold your will and never  rubbish the grace upon my life
