Lessons from Psalms 95 to 96

Psalms 95

Psalms 95:1-5 NLT
[1] Come, let us sing to the Lord! Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation. [2] Let us come to him with thanksgiving. Let us sing psalms of praise to him. [3] For the Lord is a great God, a great King above all gods. [4] He holds in his hands the depths of the earth and the mightiest mountains. [5] The sea belongs to him, for he made it. His hands formed the dry land, too.

This Psalm is a beautiful call to praise God. It starts by inviting us to join in a collective worship, just as we have calls to worship in our churches today. The Psalmist urges us to come, sing, and shout joyfully to the “Rock of our salvation.” For those who know the Bible well, we understand that Jesus is that Rock, our Savior, and this is the one we are being invited to praise. The Psalm doesn’t stop at just calling us to worship but goes on to describe who this Rock, who our salvation is. It tells us that God holds everything in His hands—the depths of the earth, the mighty mountains, the sea, and even the dry land, all belong to Him because He created it.

Take a moment to reflect on these words. If God, who holds the entire earth and all the mountains in His hands, still chooses to dwell inside of us, that’s a powerful reminder that we are made in His image. The scripture affirms that God owns everything because He created it. When we face challenges, we must remember that if God owns everything, there’s nothing in this world that can overpower His children. If we let our problems consume us, it’s a lie from the enemy. God, who controls everything, will not let His children be overwhelmed. He is in control.

Psalms 95:6-11 NLT
[6] Come, let us worship and bow down. Let us kneel before the Lord our maker, [7] for he is our God. We are the people he watches over, the flock under his care. If only you would listen to his voice today! [8] The Lord says, “Don’t harden your hearts as Israel did at Meribah, as they did at Massah in the wilderness. [9] For there your ancestors tested and tried my patience, even though they saw everything I did. [10] For forty years I was angry with them, and I said, ‘They are a people whose hearts turn away from me. They refuse to do what I tell them.’ [11] So in my anger I took an oath: ‘They will never enter my place of rest.’”

The second half of this Psalm is a call to worship and a reminder of who God is. He is our maker, our God, and He watches over us like a shepherd watching his flock. The Psalmist warns us not to harden our hearts, as the Israelites did in the wilderness at Meribah and Massah (Exodus 17), where they grumbled and tested God's patience despite witnessing His miraculous deeds. Their disobedience led to God’s anger, and because of their hardened hearts, they were denied entry into the promised land.

The lesson is clear: we should never take God’s mercy, provision, or love for granted. He is not only a consuming fire, but also a purifier. As believers, we should desire His refining fire to make us more like Him, rather than face His wrath due to disobedience.

Psalms 96

Psalms 96:1-6 NLT
[1] Sing a new song to the Lord! Let the whole earth sing to the Lord! [2] Sing to the Lord; praise his name. Each day proclaim the good news that he saves. [3] Publish his glorious deeds among the nations. Tell everyone about the amazing things he does. [4] Great is the Lord! He is most worthy of praise! He is to be feared above all gods. [5] The gods of other nations are mere idols, but the Lord made the heavens! [6] Honor and majesty surround him; strength and beauty fill his sanctuary.

This Psalm calls us to sing a new song to the Lord, to proclaim daily the good news of His salvation. Each day we live is another testament to His power and a promise that He isn’t done with us. We’re encouraged to tell others about the incredible things God has done. The Psalmist reminds us that while other nations may worship idols, our God made the heavens, and His sanctuary is filled with beauty and strength. There is no god greater than our God—He is the supreme and only true God. This passage encourages us to acknowledge and celebrate His greatness, especially His sacrifice of redemption and salvation.

Psalms 96:7-13 NLT
[7] O nations of the world, recognize the Lord; recognize that the Lord is glorious and strong. [8] Give to the Lord the glory he deserves! Bring your offering and come into his courts. [9] Worship the Lord in all his holy splendor. Let all the earth tremble before him. [10] Tell all the nations, “The Lord reigns!” The world stands firm and cannot be shaken. He will judge all peoples fairly. [11] Let the heavens be glad, and the earth rejoice! Let the sea and everything in it shout his praise! [12] Let the fields and their crops burst out with joy! Let the trees of the forest sing for joy [13] before the Lord, for he is coming! He is coming to judge the earth. He will judge the world with justice, and the nations with his truth.

The closing verses of this chapter urge all nations to recognize the Lord and give Him the glory He deserves. We are called to worship Him in His splendor and proclaim His reign over all creation. The Psalmist paints a picture of the whole earth rejoicing, from the seas to the fields, all giving praise to God. The last verse reminds us that God is coming to judge the earth with justice and truth.

It’s a sobering reminder that our time on earth is temporary, and eternity is what truly matters. Jesus is coming back—not as the baby in the manger, but as the Judge of the entire world. Are you ready for His return? Will I be ready? The world is busy with so many distractions, but as believers, we must never lose sight of the truth: Jesus is coming soon, and we must be prepared.

Prayer from Psalms 15:1-2

Song by Maverick City

There's just some problems only God can fix
If there'll be some moments that just don't make sense
I've seen it happen time and time again
There's just some problems only God can fix

There's just some battles flesh and blood can't win
There'll be some moments that just don't make sense
I can't see it now, but I'm still convinced
There's just problems only God can fix

Not by power, not by might
But by the Spirit of the living, Spirit of the living God
Not my battle, not my fight
But by the Spirit of the living, Spirit of the living God

Psalms 15:1-2 NLT
[1] Who may worship in your sanctuary, Lord? Who may enter your presence on your holy hill? [2] Those who lead blameless lives and do what is right, speaking the truth from sincere hearts.

Be Inspired End of the Month Prayer & Fasting 29th to 31st January 2025

*Be Inspired End of the Month Prayer & Fasting 29th to 31st January 2025*

 *Theme* : Prayer

 *Text* : Acts 12:5, 1 Thessalonians 5:17

Acts of the Apostles 12:5 CEB
[5] While Peter was held in prison, the church offered earnest prayer to God for him.

1 Thessalonians 5:17 CEB
[17] Pray continually.

Glory be to the Most High King for another privilege to be here today, by His grace alone. Today marks the third day of our prayer and fasting, whether you've been fasting or simply partaking in the word and prayers. My prayer is that the Lord will minister to you and do what only He can in your life. I pray that this period will ignite a new fire of prayer in your life, and your spiritual walk will not remain dormant in Jesus' name. Amen.

Over the past few days, we've focused on various aspects of prayer, and today, we will focus on removing doubt at the point of carrying the evidence of our prayers.

2 Kings 7:1-2, 17, 19-20 NLT [1] Elisha replied, “Listen to this message from the Lord! This is what the Lord says: By this time tomorrow in the markets of Samaria, six quarts of choice flour will cost only one piece of silver, and twelve quarts of barley grain will cost only one piece of silver.”
[2] The officer assisting the king said to the man of God, “That couldn’t happen even if the Lord opened the windows of heaven!” But Elisha replied, “You will see it happen with your own eyes, but you won’t be able to eat any of it!”
[17] The king appointed his officer to control the traffic at the gate, but he was knocked down and trampled to death as the people rushed out. So everything happened exactly as the man of God had predicted when the king came to his house.
[19] The king’s officer had replied, “That couldn’t happen even if the Lord opened the windows of heaven!” And the man of God had said, “You will see it happen with your own eyes, but you won’t be able to eat any of it!”
[20] And so it was, for the people trampled him to death at the gate!

This story from 2 Kings is tragic and stems from doubt. When Elisha gave a prophecy, he wasn’t speaking on his own accord, but someone doubted, and their end was tragic. You might think, “Well, that wasn’t prayer,” but the key here is to recognize that when you doubt the manifestation of your prayers, faith, or prophecy, you might end up as a spectator, or worse, never partake in it.

Many people pray to God, especially during fasting seasons like this one, where churches fast for long durations—some for days, others for months. This is a great thing, and churches often provide prayer points for each day. Some people dive into this with great zeal, but everyone’s faith and expectations are different. The problem arises when, after all the days of fasting and praying, their faith dies, and they return to the same old routine.

They refuse to act in faith, positioning themselves to receive their evidence. For those who are truly engaged in this time of prayer and fasting, they will experience their evidence—whether before the fast ends, during it, or after. But they will get their evidence. On the other hand, some may view it as just another church exercise, and the cycle of living the same way year after year begins.

When you truly desire change and have petitioned heaven with your prayers, don’t stop there. You need to start acting in the reality of what you've prayed for.

2 Kings 4:1-7 NLT [1] One day the widow of a member of the group of prophets came to Elisha and cried out, “My husband who served you is dead, and you know how he feared the Lord. But now a creditor has come, threatening to take my two sons as slaves.”
[2] “What can I do to help you?” Elisha asked. “Tell me, what do you have in the house?”
“Nothing at all, except a flask of olive oil,” she replied.
[3] And Elisha said, “Borrow as many empty jars as you can from your friends and neighbors.
[4] Then go into your house with your sons and shut the door behind you. Pour olive oil from your flask into the jars, setting each one aside when it is filled.”
[5] So she did as she was told. Her sons kept bringing jars to her, and she filled one after another.
[6] Soon every container was full to the brim! “Bring me another jar,” she said to one of her sons. “There aren’t any more!” he told her. And then the olive oil stopped flowing.
[7] When she told the man of God what had happened, he said to her, “Now sell the olive oil and pay your debts, and you and your sons can live on what is left over.”

This is a story of moving from grass to grace, from nothing to something—living the extraordinary life from the ordinary. If she had refused to borrow the pots as the man of God instructed, she wouldn’t have experienced the miracle that enabled her to pay off her debts and saved her sons from servitude. She took an active step of faith in following the prophet’s words.

Ecclesiastes 3:1 NLT
[1] For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven.

This verse reminds us that everything has a time, and as there is a time to pray, there is also a time to position yourself for the answers to your prayers. This often involves taking active steps of faith, even when it doesn’t make sense. When the Lord prompts you through the Holy Spirit, my advice is to follow His leading. The truth is, the steps of faith that work for one person may not work for another, but God honors faith, no matter how small.

It is pointless to pray and not be ready to see the evidence of your prayer. Whether your prayer is for salvation, healing, or something else, allow your mindset to shift to that of answered prayers. Be expectant of what God will do. Don’t procrastinate—take steps of faith. Conquer fear by positioning yourself to receive answers. Silence the voice of doubters by listening solely to what God is saying. Don’t sabotage your own success—if you’ve prayed about it, trust God to show Himself mighty. Kick out doubt and unbelief, so you can enjoy the supernatural answers that come through prayer.

Let us pray:

Almighty Savior, thank You for the grace to learn at Your feet.

Father, help me, forgive my unbelief, and have Your way in my life.

My Lord and my God, eliminate every fear and doubt that ridicules my faith.

Lord, as I increase my prayer life and reignite my faith in prayer, let me experience supernatural intervention.

I decree I will not live in the same cycle of failure and shame this year.

I decree that this year, I will carry back-to-back evidences of my prayers in Jesus' name.

I decree that my joy will not turn to sorrow in Jesus' name.

I decree every power working to push me out of my Rehoboth is permanently negated.

I decree that henceforth, I am moving higher and higher beyond all limitations and hindrances.

I decree that I will not nurture pain, sickness, or shame in my life in Jesus' name.

I decree that new doors are opening unto me, and wherever the soles of my feet tread, I claim it as my inheritance.

I decree I will not run this race of life against God, my Maker, in Jesus' name.

I decree that my period of waiting has now become a period of answers in Jesus' name.

I decree my year is filled with answered prayers in Jesus' name.

Personal Prayer

Thank You, Ancient of Days, for answered prayers. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Congratulations! 🎉 🎈

Be Inspired End of The Month Prayer & Fasting 29th to 32st January 2025

Be Inspired End of the Month Prayer & Fasting 29th to 31st January 2025

 Theme : Prayer

 Text : Acts 12:5, 1 Thessalonians 5:17

Acts of the Apostles 12:5 CEB
[5] While Peter was held in prison, the church offered earnest prayer to God for him.

1 Thessalonians 5:17 CEB
[17] Pray continually.

Glory to the Almighty Father for granting us another opportunity to share His word. I pray that as we dive into the Word today, the Holy Spirit will minister directly to our spirits. I pray that we gain divine clarity, and that we not only understand the Word but allow it to impact our approach to prayer—how we pray, what we pray for, and why we pray. May God's name be glorified in all of this, in Jesus' name, Amen.

In previous discussions, we established that prayer is communication with God. Today, we will explore some types of prayer, though not all that exist, but a few to give us a broader understanding. It’s important to note that the types of prayer we will discuss are not exhaustive.

Prayer of Adoration is a type of prayer that ascribes total worship and praise to God. It doesn’t focus on asking God for anything, but on honoring and glorifying Him. A great example of this can be found in Psalms 86:8-13:

Psalms 86:8-13 (CEB)
[8] My Lord! There is no one like you among the gods! There is nothing that can compare to your works!
[9] All the nations that you’ve made will come and bow down before you, Lord; they will glorify your name,
[10] because you are awesome and a wonder-worker. You are God. Just you.
[11] Teach me your way, LORD, so that I can walk in your truth. Make my heart focused only on honoring your name.
[12] I give thanks to you, my Lord, my God, with all my heart, and I will glorify your name forever,
[13] because your faithful love toward me is awesome and because you’ve rescued my life from the lowest part of hell.

From these verses, we see that the psalmist’s focus was solely on worshiping and praising God. It wasn’t about requesting anything, but about reverencing the greatness of God.

Prayer of Supplication/Petition is when we seek God’s help in a situation. This type of prayer involves presenting our requests to God. A powerful example is Hannah’s prayer at Shiloh in 1 Samuel 1:12-13, where even though her lips were moving, it was the cry of her heart. Some prayers of supplication are audible, while others may be silent, like Hannah’s. Psalms 54:1-7 is another example of this type of prayer. In verse 6, just like Hannah, David ends his prayer with a vow.

Prayer of Lamentation is a prayer expressing sorrow. It’s a prayer of grief, often reflecting deep emotional pain. Job’s prayer in Job 3 is a prime example, where he curses his birth in the midst of his suffering. Psalms 38:9-11 also illustrates a prayer of lamentation:

Psalms 38:9-11 (CEB)
[9] Everything I long for is laid out before you, my Lord; my sighs aren’t hidden from you.
[10] My heart pounds; my strength abandons me. Even the light of my eyes is gone.
[11] My loved ones and friends keep their distance from me in my sickness; those who were near me now stay far away.

Prayer of Thanksgiving is a prayer where we express gratitude to God for what He has done or what He will do. It’s crucial to remember that thanksgiving should not only come after receiving something, but even before, as a declaration of trust. We can see prayers of thanksgiving in Psalms 138, Philippians 4:6-7, and Psalms 107:1, 8.

Prayer of Intercession is when we pray on behalf of others. It is vital for believers to engage in intercession. As we saw in the previous discussion, the church prayed for Peter’s release (Acts 12). We are encouraged to pray for leaders (1 Timothy 2:1-2), for unity in the church (John 17:21), for the salvation of lost souls (Romans 10:1), and for the persecuted church (Hebrews 13:3). Intercession is a powerful form of prayer that pleases God.

Prayer of Deliverance is a prayer for freedom—whether it’s deliverance from unwanted situations or circumstances. It can be made by someone on behalf of another, or by an individual for themselves. Jabez’s prayer in 1 Chronicles 4:9-10 is an example of a heartfelt prayer for personal deliverance, and Psalms 107:6 echoes this as well.

As we mentioned earlier, we’ve only touched on a few types of prayer. This is to remind us that in our prayers to God, we can approach Him with any request—whether it's deliverance, supplication, thanksgiving, or intercession. One person’s prayer may focus on healing, while another’s may focus on forgiveness or salvation. What matters most is who we’re praying to. As believers, our prayers are directed to God Almighty, and we are to pray in the name of Jesus, not in the name of any man. Philippians 2:9-11 tells us that at the name of Jesus, every knee will bow, and every tongue confess that He is Lord, in heaven, on earth, and under the earth. The name of Jesus is powerful enough to deliver and save us in every situation. Whatever kind of prayer you are praying, ensure you pray in Jesus’ name.

Never forget, as a believer, we must not cease in our prayers. As one of our anchor scriptures says, we are to pray without ceasing. You can never "over-pray, you can only grow in understanding and depth according to the will of God. Prayer is like saving money for a rainy day; some prayers work for your future, some work for the present, and some even override past struggles because we are communicating with the Almighty God. My prayer is that you will never grow cold in prayer, for just like a fly perches only on a cold surface, the enemy will find no place to land when you are on fire in prayer. Prayer ignites a fire that resists the enemy’s attack on your soul.

Let us pray:

Lord Eternal, thank You for this beautiful day. You alone deserve all the glory.

Abba, thank You for granting us clarity and understanding about the different types of prayer.

Lord, forgive me for any time I have relented in prayer and given the enemy room in my life.

Lord, reignite the fire of faith-filled prayers in me from this day forward.

I decree that I will not be dormant in prayer, but will be on fire for You, in Jesus' name.

I decree that every situation in my life requiring Your intervention is receiving it now, in Jesus' name.

I decree that all limitations in my life are breaking in the name of Jesus.

I decree that God’s hands are redirecting my path and changing my name for His glory.

I decree that nothing will go wrong in my life; I will fulfill my purpose, in Jesus’ name.

I decree that this year, my life will take a higher trajectory to the glory of God.

I decree that no sickness will have a place in my life or my family.

Personal Prayer

Thank You, Lord Jesus, for answering my prayers. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Be Inspired End of the Month Prayer & Fasting 29th to 31st January 2025

Be Inspired End of the Month Prayer & Fasting 29th to 31st January 2025

Theme: Prayer

Text: Acts 12:5, 1 Thessalonians 5:17

Acts of the Apostles 12:5 CEB
[5] While Peter was held in prison, the church offered earnest prayer to God for him.

1 Thessalonians 5:17 CEB
[17] Pray continually.

Glory be to God for allowing us to witness the end of January 2025. It’s only by His grace that we are still here, healthy and strong. Lord, thank You for the gift of life, for salvation, and for all that You do. Thank You for giving us another chance to share Your Word. During this period of prayer and fasting, we ask that You speak directly to us, have Your way in our lives, and grant us a divine encounter in Jesus' name, amen.

Prayer is often described as communication with God, and rightfully so, because every faith or religion has a way to communicate with the supreme being they worship. As believers in Christ Jesus, we communicate directly with the Creator of heaven and earth—the One who renders all other gods powerless because He is the Most Excellent King.

The beauty of God is that we don’t need to wait for a specific time or place to communicate with Him. We can speak to Him whenever we desire. 1 Thessalonians 5:17 urges us to "pray without ceasing." You might wonder, how is it possible to pray without ceasing? When you realize that prayer isn’t just about gathering with others or finding a quiet place to get God’s attention, but is rather an ongoing act of worship and part of your daily life, you’ll understand that you can be in prayer throughout your day. Prayer becomes an invitation to God in everything you do, seeking His guidance and expecting to hear from Him.

As believers, we are blessed that when we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, He calls us friends, not servants. This means we have the privilege to approach God at any time. When you see prayer as a conversation with your Heavenly Father, you will value it even more.

While there are different types of prayer—such as intercessory prayer, meditation, thanksgiving, prayer for direction, and many others—today’s focus is to first understand the essence of prayer itself. Once you grasp what prayer is, we can explore the different kinds of prayer in greater detail.

As a believer, it's crucial to establish a prayer life and, more importantly, a relationship with God, so that your communication with Him is meaningful and not in vain.

In Acts 12:5, we see an example of intercessory prayer. The church prayed for Peter when he was imprisoned by Herod, and their prayers brought about a supernatural release. The doors of the prison opened on their own, and Peter was set free. When Rhoda ran to tell the praying believers that Peter was at the gate, they were astonished, which shows that even they had some doubts. This teaches us that every prayer must be accompanied by faith—faith that accepts the supernatural Acts 12:15.

Many people pray but lack the faith to believe in the manifestation of their prayers. Sometimes, the problem seems so large that we forget nothing is greater than the Great I Am. So I ask you today: Is your prayer backed by faith? And if so, are you ready to accept the supernatural when God answers?

Let us pray:

Father, thank You for the gift of life and all the blessings You have given me. To You be all the glory.

Lord, thank You for the salvation of my soul and the blood shed for me on Calvary.

Forgive me for any doubt that has limited me from experiencing the supernatural.

Help me, Father, to not only pray but to build an active prayer life backed by faith for the supernatural.

Remove every doubt that hinders the answers to my prayers in Jesus' name.

Just as You stepped into Peter’s situation and made the impossible possible, let me experience divine turnarounds in every impossible situation I face.

Lord, help me to consistently build my prayer life and faith in You.

(Personal prayer)

Thank You, Lord Jesus, for answered prayers. In Your name, I pray, amen.

Prayer from Revelation 4:11-12

Hymn

My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus' blood and righteousness
I dare not trust the sweetest frame
But wholly lean on Jesus' name
On Christ the solid rock I stand
All other ground is sinking sand
All other ground is sinking sand

Revelation 20:4, 11-12 KJV
[4] And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.[11] And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. [12] And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

Lessons from Deuteronomy 15 to 16

Deuteronomy 15 & 16 Reflection

In Deuteronomy 15, we continue from the instructions given in chapter 14. The chapter begins with God’s command that every seven years, debts should be forgiven—loans canceled, and obligations to friends and neighbors released. This is a time of release, a concept ordained by God, not just a human strategy. It’s a reminder that God is a God of order and structure. While this command was specifically for the Israelites, it holds meaning for us today. Through Jesus, we are all called to be God's children, and as such, we are also entitled to His mercy, just like the Gentile woman who approached Jesus in Matthew 15:27. Jesus initially said He was sent to the lost sheep of Israel, but the woman responded that even the dogs eat the crumbs from the master’s table. Her faith and humility led Jesus to heal her daughter. This story shows that while some benefits are initially reserved for God’s people, His mercy extends beyond borders, even to those who might feel unworthy.

The chapter goes on to stress that there should be no poor among the Israelites because God will bless their land. But if there are any in need, we are told not to be hard-hearted but to be generous and willing to help. This isn’t just about money—it’s about hospitality, kindness, and a heart that looks to bless others. We often think, “I’ll help when I have more,” but true generosity comes in many forms, not just financial.

Deuteronomy 15:12-23 speaks about the release of Hebrew servants. After serving their masters for six years, they were to be released in the seventh year, free of charge. If a servant loved his master and chose to stay, his ear was pierced, marking him as a servant for life. This shows the importance of freedom, but also the honor in choosing to remain because of love and loyalty. The master, however, was not to treat the servant harshly but should release them generously. These instructions remind us of the heart of service and the freedom we have in Christ.

The latter part of the chapter touches on offerings, particularly the firstborn male animals. If an animal was defective, it was not to be sacrificed but could be eaten instead. This shows God’s desire for pure offerings and calls us to examine what we give to Him—our sacrifices should reflect our best, not our leftovers.

In Deuteronomy 16:1-12, we see instructions for the Feast of Unleavened Bread, commemorating God’s deliverance of the Israelites from Egypt. The bread was to be made without yeast, possibly to symbolize the purity of their journey. Yeast, as a rising agent, makes bread puff up, and in this context, it may represent pride or exaggeration. God desires us to come as we are, not to inflate our worth or inflate the situation. The feast was to be inclusive of everyone—family, foreigners, orphans, and widows. There was no segregation in celebrating God’s goodness.

Deuteronomy 16:13-21 describes the Festival of Shelters, a joyous celebration at the end of the harvest season. It was to last seven days, and people were to celebrate in the place God chose for them. It was a time for everyone to gather and celebrate God’s provision. During these festivals, they were to bring offerings according to how God had blessed them, and justice was to be maintained in the community. Judges were to be appointed in each tribe, ensuring that justice was impartial, fair, and free from bribery. The passage also warns against setting up wooden poles near God’s altar, which I interpret as a reminder to not place anything—money, idols, or false priorities—before God.

While some of these instructions might seem outdated in a physical sense, they still hold spiritual relevance. Our altar to God is in our minds, and we must not allow anything to take His place in our hearts. These chapters offer us guidelines for living according to God’s precepts. I pray that God will guide us, give us a deeper understanding of His Word, and the grace to live by it, in Jesus' name. Amen.

Lessons from Psalms 89 -90

Psalm 89 was written by Ethan the Ezrahite, a wise man who lived long before Solomon. The psalm begins with a beautiful declaration of God's mercy, as Ethan says, "I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever: with my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all generations" (Psalm 89:1, KJV). There’s actually a song I know that echoes this verse, and it instantly helped me realize that Ethan was approaching God from a place of seeking His mercy. He goes on to recount God's promises of mercy and faithfulness, especially as they relate to David. Ethan speaks of how God made a covenant with David, promising that his descendants would establish and build God's throne.

To me, Ethan’s approach is a perfect example of holding God to His word. He wasn't asking for mercy based on his own righteousness, but was reminding God of the promises He made to David. Ethan then praises God's power and wonders, recounting how God broke the enemies, scattered them, and demonstrated His might. He also reflects on how God anointed David with His holy oil, establishing him as His chosen one, and how God promised to always defend him from his enemies.

Reading this, I was struck by how deeply God loves a man. When God chooses to love someone, nothing—absolutely nothing—can stand against that person. Even though David wasn’t perfect, his life was marked by deep reverence for God, and he always ran back to God when he faltered. This is the kind of relationship God wants with us: one where we don’t sit in shame when the enemy tries to accuse us, but rather run back to God, the One who created us.

In Psalm 89:26-52, Ethan continues, describing how David will cry to God and how God promises to make David His firstborn, higher than all the kings of the earth. God’s mercy won’t just be upon David, but will extend to his descendants—on the condition that they stay righteous. If they turn away from God’s will, they will face judgment. This is a powerful reminder that, while God is loving and merciful, there are consequences for sin. It teaches us that salvation is personal, and we cannot depend solely on the faith of our parents. Parents must teach their children to walk in their own right standing with God.

As the psalm continues, God promises David that His love and mercy will never depart from him. There’s a pause (Selah) after verse 37, which is meant for reflection or praise. But from verse 38 onward, Ethan begins to lament, feeling as though God has broken His covenant and allowed David’s crown to be cast down. He speaks of the constant punishment they’ve endured, but in verses 45-52, he humbly asks God for mercy, pleading for God to remember His lovingkindness and remove their reproach.

This part of the psalm is so humbling. When we fall short of God's mercy, we shouldn’t come to God with pride, demanding our own way. Instead, we should approach God with humility, acknowledging our shortcomings and asking for His mercy. As the saying goes, "mercy prevails over judgment." I pray that God’s mercy speaks for us, especially in the areas where we’ve fallen short of His glory.

Psalm 90 is a prayer by Moses, the man of God. It’s a short psalm, just 17 verses, but it’s so insightful. Moses reflects on how God has been their refuge, protecting His people from destruction. He also mentions how, in God’s eyes, a thousand years are like a day gone by. He reminds us that life is short, and that the wrath of God comes on those who rebel against His will. Moses even mentions that the typical lifespan of a person is about 70 years (Psalm 90:10), which many interpret as the typical age to live, though God's promise is to satisfy us with long life if we live according to His will.

Moses prays, “Teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom” (Psalm 90:12). This is a prayer we often hear at birthdays, but it’s more than just about counting years. It’s about living wisely—applying God’s word (which is wisdom in itself) in every moment, hour, day, and year. Wisdom doesn’t just come in the big moments; it’s woven into the fabric of our daily lives, and we need to live it consistently.

Moses also prays that God would establish the work of His hands and make His beauty rest upon His people. I love Psalm 90 because it reminds us that life is fleeting, like a vapor, but when we live for God and seek His wisdom, that vapor can fill the right places and serve His purpose. Life may be short, but it becomes meaningful when we live according to the wisdom of God. I pray that I would live each day by God’s wisdom, and that I would walk in His grace, avoiding His wrath and living in a way that reflects Christ to those around me.

Lord, I ask for grace to live by Your wisdom every day. Help me to walk in Your light and to apply Your word to every moment of my life. May I live a life that honors You, and may Your mercy cover me in all areas where I fall short. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Prayer from Mathew 6:34

Song by Anthony Brown

You did not create me to worry
You did not create me to fear
But You created me to worship daily
So Ima leave it all right here

My hands are raised because I surrender
Your will is what's best for me
I worship You because You're Jehovah Jireh
I bow before the King of Kings

No more crying no more complaining
I believe Your word is true
Lord You promised never to leave me lonely
So this is what I'm going to do

I will trust in You Lord
I will trust in You Lord
I will put my trust in You

Matthew 6:34 KJV
[34] Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

I wouldn't trade you for riches untold'.

Psalms 50:1-3 NLT
